About This Day

Birthday of Andal, the beloved Vaishnava saint-poetess who composed Tiruppavai and is considered an avatar of Bhudevi.

Andal Jayanthi, observed on Aadi Pooram in the Tamil month of Aadi, marks the appearance of Andal — the only woman among the twelve Alvar saints of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. She was found as an infant beneath a tulsi plant in the temple garden at Srivilliputhur by Periyalvar, who raised her as his daughter. Andal refused all earthly marriage, declaring she would wed none but Ranganatha of Srirangam, and composed the Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi — poems of such devotional force that the Thiruppavai is still recited daily in Vaishnava homes through the month of Margazhi. She is said to have merged into the deity at Srirangam. The day is celebrated with particular splendour at Srivilliputhur, her birthplace, and at Vishnu temples across Tamil Nadu.
