1. Introduction

Shubh Kaalam (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the Shubh Kaalam mobile application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information. By using the App you agree to the practices described here.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

Phone number — used solely for one-time-password (OTP) authentication. We do not use it for marketing.
Full name — used to personalise your experience within the App.
Birth details — date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth (city, state, country). These are used exclusively to calculate Panchang, Kundli, and other astrological data shown in the App.
Relationship labels — optional labels (e.g. “Mother”, “Spouse”) you assign to other profiles you create.

2.2 Location data

Device location (GPS) — when you grant location permission, we use your device's approximate location to calculate accurate sunrise, sunset, and Panchang timings for your current position. Location is accessed only while the App is in use and is never stored on our servers.
Birth place search queries — when you enter a city or place name for a birth profile, that search text is sent to the Google Places API to return matching place suggestions. We do not store raw search queries; only the final selected place name and its coordinates are saved to your profile.

Note: Location access is required to provide accurate daily Panchang timings. Without it, calculations default to a general timezone and may not reflect your precise local sunrise/sunset times.

2.3 Information collected automatically

Device identifiers — a unique identifier for each device you use to sign in, used to enforce our per-account device limit and to route push notifications to the correct device.
Usage analytics — screen views, feature interactions, and session data collected through PostHog. Events are tagged with a randomly generated internal ID only — your name, phone number, and birth details are never included. PostHog cannot link any event back to you as an individual.
Push notification tokens — generated by Firebase Cloud Messaging and stored to deliver daily Panchang notifications you opt into.
Subscription and transaction data — managed by RevenueCat (our subscription platform) and the relevant app store (Google Play or Apple App Store). We receive purchase status events from RevenueCat to unlock premium features. We do not store raw payment card details.

3. How We Use Your Information

To authenticate you and maintain your account securely.
To calculate and display personalised Panchang, Kundli, dasha, and astrological reports based on your birth details. Only birth date, time, and coordinates are transmitted to AstrologyAPI.com — your name, phone number, and account identity are never included in these requests, so AstrologyAPI.com cannot trace the data back to you.
To determine accurate sunrise, sunset, and Panchang timings for your current location (only when you grant location permission). Location data is used in real time and is not stored on our servers.
To deliver push notifications for daily Panchang and auspicious timings (only if you grant notification permission).
To manage your subscription status and unlock or restrict premium features accordingly.
To analyse usage in aggregate so we can fix bugs and improve the App.
To enforce our per-account device limit and prevent unauthorised account sharing.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We do not use your birth details, phone number, or name for advertising purposes.

4. How We Protect Your Identity with Third Parties

Before transmitting any data to third-party services, we strip or exclude all directly identifying information — your name, phone number, and account credentials are never shared with external APIs. Specifically:

AstrologyAPI.com — receives only birth date, time, and geographic coordinates. No name, phone number, or account identifier is included. AstrologyAPI.com has no means to link a calculation request back to you as an individual.
PostHog — receives only a randomly generated internal user ID alongside usage events (screen views, feature taps). Your name, phone number, and birth details are never sent to PostHog. The internal ID is not publicly exposed and cannot be used to identify you outside our own systems.
Google Places API — receives only the place name text you type when searching for a birth location. No account information accompanies these requests.
Twilio — receives your phone number only at the moment of OTP sign-in. It is not shared with any other service and is not retained by Twilio once the message is delivered.

5. Data Storage and Security

Your account data and birth profiles are stored in Supabase, a cloud-hosted database service. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access is restricted by row-level security policies so that only you can read your own data.

Your phone number is transmitted to Twilio solely to deliver the OTP SMS during sign-in; Twilio does not retain it beyond what is required to send the message. Birth details (date, time, and geographic coordinates) are transmitted to AstrologyAPI.com to generate astrological calculations. These requests contain no name, phone number, or account identifier — AstrologyAPI.com receives only the bare astronomical parameters and cannot trace the request back to you as an individual. Birth place search text is transmitted to the Google Places API; only the final selected place name and coordinates are stored in your profile.

Analytics data is stored by PostHog on servers in the United States. Subscription data is stored by RevenueCat. Push notification tokens are stored by Firebase (Google). Each of these third-party processors has its own security and privacy practices.

While we take reasonable precautions, no method of internet transmission or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security of your information.

6. Data Retention

We retain your account data and birth profiles for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, your personal data and birth profiles are permanently deleted from our systems within 30 days. Aggregated, anonymised analytics data may be retained indefinitely.

7. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you.
Request correction of inaccurate data.
Request deletion of your account and associated data.
Object to or restrict certain processing of your data.
Withdraw consent at any time (e.g. disabling push notifications).

9. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For material changes we will notify you via a notice in the App.
