Ashwin full moon at sunrise; holy bath, Satyanarayan puja, Valmiki Jayanti and start of Kartik snan
Ashwin Purnima is the full-moon day of Ashwin as reckoned by the tithi at sunrise, and it closes the lunar month in the Purnimanta calendar. When Purnima spans two days, the night observances — Sharad Purnima and Kojagara — go to the evening on which the full moon rises, while the sunrise Purnima is kept for snan, daan and the day's worship. It is a day for holy bathing in the Ganga and other sacred rivers, charity, and the Satyanarayan Katha, the Purnima worship of Vishnu as the embodiment of truth. Many devotees begin the month-long Kartik snan from this Purnima, bathing before dawn daily until Kartik Purnima. It is also the birth anniversary of the sage Valmiki, author of the Ramayana, and in the Rajput and Vaishnava traditions of Meerabai, the poet-saint of Krishna. In Odisha, Kumar Purnima festivities continue, and in the Jain tradition the Ashwin Navapada Oli concludes today. Offering arghya to the moon, lighting lamps, and giving white items such as rice, milk and cloth are especially recommended.
Those keeping the Satyanarayan vrat fast until the katha is complete.
