About This Day

4th day of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha — Bahula Chaturthi is observed with fasting for Lord Ganesha.

Bahula Chaturthi, known in Gujarat as Bol Choth, falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Bhadrapada and is dedicated to the worship of cows and calves. It takes its name from the cow Bahula, who met a lion on her way home and asked to be allowed to feed her calf first, promising to return — and did return, moving the lion to release her. The festival honours the maternal principle the cow embodies, and by extension Krishna as Gopala, the protector of cows. Devotees, chiefly women in farming families, keep a fast for the wellbeing and long life of their children. A distinctive rule governs the day: milk and milk products are avoided entirely, on the reasoning that a cow milk belongs first to her calf.
