Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birth of Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, and the God of new beginnings, wisdom, and remover of obstacles. The festival is especially grand in Maharashtra where Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak popularized it as a public festival in 1893 to unite people during the freedom struggle. Clay idols of Ganesha are installed in homes and public pandals for 1.5, 5, 7, or 10 days before being ceremonially immersed in water (Visarjan).
