Birthday of Goddess Gayatri, the mother of the Vedas — celebrated with recitation of the Gayatri Mantra.
Gayatri Jayanti honours the appearance of Gayatri Devi, personified as the mother of the Vedas. The Gayatri is the verse of the Rigveda addressed to Savitr, the illuminating power of the sun, and it is the mantra given at the sacred thread ceremony as the foundation of a lifetime of practice. It asks for nothing material — only that the divine light awaken the understanding. Some traditions observe Gayatri Jayanti on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, others on Shravana Purnima alongside Upakarma, when the mantra is repeated in its thousands. The day is kept by reciting the Gayatri, performing sandhyavandana with attention, and by renewing the practice for anyone whose daily discipline has lapsed.
A light fast is optional. Those who keep it fast until the prescribed japa count is complete, then take a satvik meal.
