About This Day

New moon in Shravan month — called Hariyali (green) Amavasya, auspicious for planting trees and worshipping nature.

Hariyali Amavasya is the new moon of Shravan, celebrated across North India as the green new moon — the point at which the monsoon has fully taken hold and the land has turned green after the heat of summer. It is above all a day of tree planting: families plant saplings of peepal, banyan, neem, mango and tulsi, and the act is treated as a religious offering rather than a civic gesture. In Mathura and Vrindavan the day draws large crowds for the swing festival at the Krishna temples, where the deity is placed on a decorated jhula. Alongside the celebration, the usual Amavasya observances hold: a pre-dawn bath, tarpan to the ancestors, and charity of food and grain.
