Festival of greenery in Shravan month — women dress in green, observe fast, and worship Goddess Parvati.
Hariyali Teej falls on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan and celebrates the reunion of Shiva and Parvati after her long austerity across a hundred and seven births. On the hundred and eighth, Shiva finally accepted her as his wife. Married women keep the fast for the long life of their husbands; unmarried girls keep it in the hope of a good match. It is called Hariyali — green — because the monsoon has turned the land green by this point in Shravan. Women wear green, apply mehendi, and swing on jhulas hung from trees, singing kajri and teej songs. In Rajasthan the day is marked by a state procession of the Teej idol through Jaipur. The custom of sindhara — gifts of clothes, sweets and bangles sent from a girl parents to her marital home — is central to the day.
Hariyali Teej is traditionally a nirjala fast — without food or water — kept through the day and night. Those who cannot manage it take fruit and milk once.
