About This Day

Kajari Teej on the 3rd day of Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha — women fast for their husbands and worship Goddess Parvati.

Kajari Teej falls on the Krishna Paksha Tritiya of Bhadrapada, a fortnight after Raksha Bandhan, and is the second of the three Teej festivals of the monsoon. It takes its name from kajri — the folk songs of the rainy season sung in the Bhojpuri and Awadhi regions, songs of separation and longing addressed by a woman to an absent husband. Married women keep a fast for the long life of their husbands; unmarried girls keep it for a good match. The distinctive ritual of the day is the worship of a neem branch installed as the goddess, and the offering of sattu. In Rajasthan and Bundelkhand the fast is broken only after the moon has risen and been offered arghya, following a formal cow worship.
