Gujarat's auspicious 5th day post-Diwali; new ventures and accounts started
Labh Panchami, also called Saubhagya Panchami or Gyan Panchami, falls on Kartika Shukla Panchami, the fifth day of the Gujarati New Year, and closes the Diwali festivities in Gujarat. 'Labh' means profit and 'saubhagya' good fortune. Shops and businesses that closed after Diwali reopen on this day, and traders formally begin the new year's trade by writing the first entries in their new account books, marked with a swastika, 'Shubh' on the left and 'Labh' on the right, and the Shri pyramid. Lord Ganesha, the giver of labh (profit) and shubh (auspiciousness), whose sons are said to be Shubh and Labh, is worshipped with Goddess Lakshmi. People also visit relatives they could not meet during Diwali. Worship on this day is believed to bring prosperity, good luck and success in business through the year. For Jains it is Gyan Panchami, when sacred scriptures are cleaned, displayed and worshipped, and Jains pray for right knowledge, since knowledge destroys karma.
Jains may fast for Gyan Panchami; others do not fast.
