About This Day

Grand Sankashti Chaturthi in Bhadrapada, especially significant in South India — Sangada Hara means remover of troubles.

Maha Sangada Hara Chaturthi is the Kannada name for the Sankashti Chaturthi of Bhadrapada month, and the prefix Maha marks it as the greatest of the twelve Sankashti observances of the year. Sangada Hara means the destroyer of difficulty. In Karnataka this vrat is kept with particular seriousness by households carrying an unresolved burden — a court case, a chronic illness, a debt, or a delayed marriage. The observance is identical in form to Sankashti elsewhere in India: a fast held from sunrise, an evening puja to Ganesha with durva and modak, and the breaking of the fast only after the moon has risen and been offered arghya. Coming shortly before Ganesha Chaturthi, it also opens the Ganesha season in many Kannada homes.
