Tuesday fasting during Shravan month dedicated to Goddess Mangala Gauri (Parvati) for marital happiness.
Mangala Gauri Vrat is kept on the Tuesdays of Shravan by married women, for the long life, health and prosperity of their husbands and for the wellbeing of their children. Gauri is Parvati in her benign, golden aspect, and Mangal (Tuesday) is the day of the planet Mars, which governs marriage, vitality and the household. The vrat is traditionally begun in the first year of marriage and continued for five consecutive years, then concluded with udyapan. Newly married women often keep it at their maternal home in the first year. The puja is distinguished by its offerings in sixteens — sixteen wicks, sixteen types of flowers, sixteen laddus, sixteen bangles — the number sixteen standing for the completeness of a married woman auspiciousness.
Many observers avoid salt entirely for the day. The vrat is traditionally kept for five consecutive years from the first year of marriage and concluded with a formal udyapan.
