About This Day

Tuesday fasting in Shravan month for Goddess Gauri, observed in North Indian tradition for marital blessings.

This is the Mangala Gauri Vrat as reckoned by the North Indian Purnimanta calendar, in which the lunar month ends on the full moon. Shravan begins about a fortnight earlier in the North than in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the South, so the Tuesdays counted for this vrat differ. The observance is the same: married women fast on the Tuesdays of Shravan and worship Gauri — Parvati in her golden, benign form — for the long life and health of their husbands and the wellbeing of their children. The offerings are arranged in sixteens, and the vrat is kept for five consecutive years from the first year of marriage before being concluded with udyapan. If you follow the Amanta calendar, use the Mangala Gauri Vrat dates listed for your region instead.
