About This Day

Monthly fasting on the 8th day of Krishna Paksha in honor of Lord Krishna's birth.

Masik Krishna Janmashtami falls on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksha each lunar month, the same tithi on which Lord Krishna was born in the prison of Mathura. It is the monthly observance of Janmashtami, kept by devotees who wish to hold that devotion through the year rather than once annually. The worship centres on Krishna in his infant form, Bal Gopal, and on the qualities his birth story teaches: that the divine enters the world at its darkest hour, in captivity, at midnight, and that love is the force that carries it to safety. Fasting and midnight worship on this day are believed to bring the blessing of children, harmony in the family, and freedom from sorrow.
