About This Day

Monthly Shivaratri observed on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha with fasting and night vigil for Lord Shiva.

Masik Shivaratri falls on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha every lunar month — the night before the new moon, when the moon is at its weakest and the mind is said to be most restless. Shiva is worshipped through the night to steady it. Each month carries the same essential merit as Maha Shivaratri in miniature: the destruction of accumulated karma, freedom from fear, and progress toward moksha. It is particularly recommended for those seeking a life partner, and for anyone under the influence of a difficult Shani or Rahu period. Devotees who cannot undertake the full Maha Shivaratri vrat often keep this monthly observance instead.
