About This Day

Raksha Bandhan — the sacred festival of the bond between brothers and sisters, observed on Shravan Purnima.

Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond of love and protection between brothers and sisters. The sister ties a sacred thread (Rakhi) on her brother's wrist, praying for his well-being and longevity. The brother in return pledges to protect his sister and gives her gifts. The festival also has a cosmic dimension — Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi on King Bali, and Lord Indra's wife Sachi tied a thread on Indra before battle. The thread is a symbol of divine protection.
