Satya Yugadi: the day the Satya (Krita) Yuga began; a Yugadi tithi for Shraddha and charity
Sata Yuga here refers to Satya Yugadi, the anniversary of the beginning of the Satya Yuga (also Krita Yuga), the first and golden age of the four-age cycle. According to the Puranas, it began on Kartika Shukla Navami, the day also celebrated as Akshaya Navami. The four Yugadi tithis — Satya Yuga on Kartika Shukla Navami, Treta on Vaishakha Shukla Tritiya (Akshaya Tritiya), Dvapara on Magha Amavasya, and Kali on Bhadrapada Krishna Trayodashi — are regarded as especially meritorious days for bathing, charity and Shraddha, and ancestral offerings on them are said to satisfy the Pitris for years. In the Satya Yuga, lasting 1,728,000 years by the traditional reckoning, dharma stood on all four legs — truth, austerity, purity and compassion — people lived long, and meditation (dhyana) was the path to liberation. Four avatars of Vishnu — Matsya, Kurma, Varaha and Narasimha — appeared in this age. Remembering the Satya Yuga reminds devotees of the ideal of a life founded on truth, and good deeds done on its Yugadi are said to give inexhaustible (akshaya) merit.
No specific fast; those doing Shraddha eat after the rites.
