About This Day

Shivaratri in the holy Shravan month — especially sacred as Shiva is believed to be most accessible to devotees.

Sawan Shivaratri is the Shivaratri that falls within the month of Shravan, on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha. Of the twelve monthly Shivaratris of the year, this one is second in importance only to Maha Shivaratri, because it falls in the month most sacred to Shiva. Shravan is when the Samudra Manthan took place and Shiva drank the Halahala poison, and this night is kept in gratitude for that act. It is the culminating night of the Kanwar Yatra: pilgrims who have walked barefoot carrying Ganga water from Haridwar, Gaumukh or Sultanganj complete their journey by pouring it over the Shivling at dawn. Devotees keep a full fast and a night vigil, worshipping in each of the four praharas of the night.
