New moon in Shravan month — observed for ancestral rites during the holiest month of the Hindu calendar.

Shravana Amavasya is the new moon of the month of Shravan, and carries a weight few other Amavasyas do because it falls in the month most sacred to Shiva. It is a day of ancestral remembrance: tarpan and pind daan offered now are held to reach the Pitru Loka with unusual directness, and those with Pitru Dosha or Kaal Sarp Dosha in the birth chart are counselled to perform the rites on this day. It is also the eve of the Shravan Shukla fortnight, when the great festivals of the month — Nag Panchami, Raksha Bandhan, Varalakshmi Vrat — begin. Regionally the day carries different names and moods: Hariyali Amavasya in the North, Gatari Amavasya in Maharashtra, Chitalagi Amavasya in Odisha, Aadi Amavasai in Tamil Nadu.
