Full moon in Shravan — celebrated as Raksha Bandhan and Narali Purnima, one of the most festive full moons.
Shravana Purnima is the full moon of the month of Shravan and one of the most densely observed days in the Hindu year — a single tithi carrying half a dozen distinct traditions. It is Raksha Bandhan, when sisters tie the protective thread. It is Upakarma, when Brahmins change the sacred thread and formally resume Vedic study. It is Narali Purnima on the Konkan coast, when the sea is offered a coconut and the fishing season reopens. It is Hayagriva Jayanti, Gayatri Jayanti and Sanskrit Diwas. It is Jhulan Purnima in Bengal and Odisha, and Kajari Purnima in the central belt. What unites them is the theme of bond and renewal: a thread tied, a thread changed, a season begun again.
Fasting is optional. Those keeping the Purnima vrat fast through the day and break it after offering arghya to the full moon.
