About This Day

Fasting on Shravan Purnima for spiritual merit and the blessings of Lord Vishnu and ancestors.

Shravana Purnima Vrat is the fasting observance kept on the full moon of Shravan, distinct from the celebratory festivals that share the same tithi. Purnima vrats are dedicated to Vishnu and to Chandra, and the Shravan one carries additional weight because it falls in the holiest month of the year. Devotees fast through the day, perform the Satyanarayana Vrat Katha, and break the fast only after offering arghya to the risen full moon. The vrat is undertaken for mental peace, for the strengthening of a weak or afflicted Moon in the birth chart, for household harmony, and for the fulfilment of a specific wish. Many families keep it as a monthly discipline through the year, with the Shravan Purnima counted as the most meritorious of the twelve.
