About This Day

Ekadashi in Shravan Shukla Paksha — fasting on this day is said to grant the boon of a child (Putra).

Shravana Putrada Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in Shravan and is kept above all by couples seeking the blessing of a child — putrada means the giver of offspring. The Bhavishya Purana tells of King Mahijit of Mahishmati, childless and troubled, who was counselled by the sage Lomasha to observe this vrat; his queen bore a son the following year. Beyond the literal prayer for children, the vrat is understood as a petition for the wellbeing and long life of existing children, and for the continuity of the family line. It is also called Pavitra Ekadashi in parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, where a sacred thread — pavitra — is offered to Vishnu and later worn.
