Monday fasting in Shravan month for Lord Shiva, observed especially in North India with Kanwar Yatra pilgrimages.
This is the Shravan Somwar Vrat as reckoned by the North Indian Purnimanta calendar, in which the lunar month ends on the full moon rather than the new moon. Shravan therefore begins and ends about a fortnight earlier in the North than in Maharashtra, Gujarat and the South, and the Mondays counted as Sawan Somwar differ accordingly. The observance itself is identical: a fast kept on the Mondays of Shravan, with abhishek of the Shivling in water, milk and bilva patra. Unmarried women keep it to obtain a good husband, following Parvati own austerity; married women keep it for the long life of their husbands. If you follow the Amanta calendar, use the Shravan Somwar dates listed for your region instead.
Kept for all the Mondays of Shravan by the North Indian reckoning. Many undertake the Kanwar Yatra during this period, carrying Ganga water to a Shiva temple.
