Sun enters Leo (Simha) — marks a monthly solar transition, also marks the start of the Malayalam New Year.
Simha Sankranti marks the entry of the Sun into Simha rashi — Leo — which is the Sun own sign, and is therefore counted among the more auspicious of the twelve annual sankrantis. It opens the solar month of Simha, and in Kerala the same moment begins Chingam and the Malayalam New Year. Sankranti days are prescribed for snan (ritual bathing), daan (charity) and tarpan, and the merit of charity given on a sankranti is held to be multiplied. In Uttarakhand the day is celebrated as Ghee Sankranti or Olgia, when ghee is eaten and applied to the head, and farmers offer the first produce of the season. In parts of the South it is observed with Surya worship and the recitation of the Aditya Hridayam.
No formal fast is prescribed. Those performing tarpan fast until the rites and charity are complete, then take a satvik meal.
